Layer Marney Tower
COLCHESTER, ESSEX
Saturday May 14th 2005
Location Background

This impressive estate was built in the first half of Henry VIII's reign, the creation of Henry, 1st Lord Marney. Lord Marney died in 1523 and his son continued his fathers dream. Sadly John died two years later leaving no male heirs to continue the family line or to continue with the construction. After the 2nd Lord Marney's death the estate passed into the hands of Sir Brian Tuke who was Treasurer to the Royal Household and Governor of the Kings Posts, and his daughter-in-law entertained Queen Elizabeth here in 1579. From Sir Tuke and through the centuries the house has passed into many different hands. The buildings suffered considerable damage from the Great Earthquake of 1884, after which repairs were begun. The next owner was Walter de Zoete who carried on and expanded the work, enlarging the gardens, building a folly known as the Tea House and converting the stables into a Long Gallery. The house is currently occupied by the Carrington family, while reports over the years of supernatural activity include a haunting by an author of ghost books, a phantom gardener, and graves of small children have also been uncovered.

Investigation Report

Arriving at this magnificent Tudor masterpiece expectations for the night ahead were high. Joined for the first time on an investigation by my mother, who I describe as the 'sensitive one' in the family, hopes were raised of finally witnessing something truly paranormal. Our opening vigil of the night took place in a first floor room which used to be a bedroom, previously noted for activity which included bed covers being stripped away by mysterious hands. Today the room boasted nothing more than a large dining table upon which we had placed a planchette in order to attempt some automatic writing. The team split into pairs and early efforts brought little more than unintelligible scribbling, however one pair did eventually appear to clearly write the letters R and M. Had these represented initials of a spirit presence the M could have been attributed to the Marney family. Other than that little else of any interest was forthcoming. The second vigil took place in the long-awaited Tudor Tower, which many of the team had felt a certain trepidation about during the earlier walk around. We begun the vigil with a group séance in the cold and exposed tower room at the very top, however all seemed quiet. The team then split into pairs to explore the full extent of the tower while I underwent a solo vigil on the lower tower stairwell, however again all remained peaceful. Our third vigil took place in the Cinema room where we attempted a number of EVP experiments. At one point when replaying the question 'Are You Male or Female?' some members of the group believed they heard a response saying 'Male' on the tape, however when we played it back a second time there was no voice, but in that exact place there was a strange glitch in the tape, as if it had been erased or chewed. A second Dictaphone did appear to pick up a number of other anomalous sounds, one of which sounded like a sigh and another even more bizarrely sounded like a belch. Our final vigil took us to an original Tudor room where a glass divination experiment had been set up for the team, and it was here the most notable activity of the night took place. The group, which included a number of sceptics, initially found the glass moving freely, but consistently in one direction towards Nicola. Following a drawn out process of questioning and elimination it appeared that connection was made with a spirit named Elizabeth Marney, and Nicola reminded her of an elder sister who had died while she was alive. This was later verified as the Marney Family Tree did indeed show an Elizabeth Marney with an elder sister who had died before her.
