The Ancient Ram Inn
WOOTEN UNDER EDGE, GLOUCESTERSHIRE Friday August 12th 2005 |
|
| Location Background | |
The Ancient Ram Inn possesses a genuinely chilling aura, and a reputation that is so menacing that many local people won't even walk past it at night. The building is thought to date from around 1145, and served for a time as a priest' s house before converting to an inn. After it closed for business in 1968 John Humphries, the sole living occupant, purchased the building from the brewery. The Inn supposedly contains a number of haunted rooms, including the "Men' s Kitchen" which reputedly stands on the site of a pagan burial ground, and where the disturbing sound of a baby crying is often heard. The most active room is the oppressive and terrifying Bishop' s Room on the first floor. Here activity has included a medium being flung across the corridor, apparitions of a cavalier and 2 monks, the terrifiying screams of a man murdered there, a phantom shepherd & his dog and most notably an incubus (demons that have intercourse with those sleeping there). |

| Investigation Report | |
The Ancient Ram Inn is an extraordinary location, not simply because of its supposed paranormal associations but also due to the sheer historical atmosphere that surrounds every nook and cranny of this truly ancient building. Cluttered with historical artefacts and antiquities from every decade imaginable, together with owner John Humphries, an eccentric and fascinating man with incredible tales of his experiences at The Ram, the place took on a strangely welcoming and homely feel. We were joined by our medium for the night John Crowdey, who upon arrival expressed some trepidation about the night ahead, and expectations among the team were at their peak. My opening vigil lead a team investigating the ground floor of the Inn, and accompanied by owner John we began the night in the infamous Mayflower Barn. John believes he is able to encourage spirit lights to appear within the barn, and immediately he set about asking aloud for these lights to show themselves to his eager audience. Armed with 3 night vision camcorders we set about recording this event, and early encouragement was not long in coming. Shortly after John began to ask out it appeared that a plethora of lights, some pin-pricks and some bright shooting orbs appeared to fill the barn above his head, viewed through my nightvision camera View Here View Here. It is not possible however to ensure that these lights were anything more than flying insects, although it is interesting to note that after John has stopped asking for lights to appear above his head the video failed to pick up any further anomalies. After this short experiment we attempted some glass divination in the lounge area, which unfortunately brought disappointing results, although at one stage the team did believe that the glass was vibrating slightly under their fingers. My second vigil took a team to the infamous Bishop's Room, suggested to be the most haunted of all the rooms at the Inn. Here a few of us, including myself, did experience a ringing sensation in our ears when sat on the bed furthest from the door, and after splitting the vigil in pairs to investigate the room we did capture some activity on the locked off camera View Here View Here. Our final vigil took place in the Witches Room where I encouraged the team to take part in a linked séance. Sat cross-legged on the floor we linked fingers and attempted to encourage some activity to take place in the room. Unfortunately again the room felt flat, although some of the team did at times sense a presence however no definitive activity took place. Our night had rushed by and it came to end with a slight sense of disappointment that we hadn't captured more phenomena. It just goes to show that there are never any guarantees when investigating the paranormal. |
