Jamaica Inn
BOLVENTOR, CORNWALL Saturday September 3rd 2005 |
|
| Location Background | |
Jamaica Inn is a legendary coaching house located on Bodmin Moor, Cornwall. The building was erected in 1750 to give shelter to travellers as they passed over the wind-swept moors. The inn and its shadowy past were both immortalised in Daphne du Mauriers novel, "Jamaica Inn" published in 1936. Its isolated location made it a popular stop for smugglers and today, the Jamaica Inn is also home to a Smugglers' Museum, which comprises many artefacts from these unsavoury characters. Reports of a strange man dressed in a tricorne hat and cloak, apparently appears in the DuMaurier restaurant and then seems to walk through solid doors. Many people have also spotted the figure of a man sitting motionless on the wall outside of the Inn, apparently linked to a story about a stranger who when drinking in the inn was summoned outside only for his body was found on the moor the next day. |

| Investigation Report | |
Arriving at this isolated and windswept location you couldn't deny the atmosphere that surrounded such a legendary building. With a skull & cross-bone flag fluttering in the wind, and the famous sign swinging and creaking in the courtyard, we took our first steps back in time to a period when this area would have been teaming with smugglers. We met up with Andrew and our medium for the night Stuart, who on his arrival revealed a link to the name 'Jack the Hat', a possible connection with notorious smuggler Jack Travellis who is often seen in a tricorn hat. He had also tried some psychic art prior to his arrival, the result of which was a picture of an L-shaped building with a courtyard remarkably resembling Jamaica Inn. He had even managed to lay the cobbles on the courtyard in the right direction, as well as the V-Shaped entrance to the public bar and a horizon which represented the moors in the distance. While the first teams embarked on a walk around with Stuart, I set about trying some glass divination and automatic writing in the restaurant. We managed to get some slight movement from the glass, suggesting a connection with a unhappy female spirit. The night vigils began as I took a team to Room 4, where little activity was recorded although some of the team did experience tingling and shivering sensations, while Pete, who attempted some scrying in the dressing-table mirror, suggested that he felt strange sensations of being inside the mirror looking outwards. My second vigil took a team to Room 6, where again all remained quiet. The night up to this point had been a little disappointing, especially as some of the other groups had experienced activity in the same parts of the building. I then took a team to the bar area where we attempted some Glass Divination. The group did manage to get the glass to move, revealing an initial link with a woman named Margaret followed by the suggested appearance of Jack. His arrival did signal some other activity, as knocking sounds and footsteps were recorded, however nothing truly conclusive. My final vigil also took place in the bar, and again we attempted some further divination with the glass. This time we appeared to make a connection with Joss, a former Innkeeper whose plaque on the floor marks the spot where he was apparently murdered. Some team members felt they were being touched, while we also witnessed a strange flash of light which streaked along the bar, as if someone had taken a photograph outside, however nobody was in the courtyard. Of greater interest however was the revelation on the next day that the legend of Joss and his murder was a complete fabrication, and the plaque was there simply to enhance the mystery of the Inn. So who indeed, if anyone, had the group connected with? |
