Borley Rectory
EXETER, DEVON

Once known as 'the most haunted house in England', Borley Rectory was said to be the site of many kinds of mysterious phenomena such as ghosts, poltergeists, objects moving by themselves, whisperings, strange voices, footsteps, and the ringing of bells. The house was burnt down and no trace of it now remains. The spirits haunting Borley Rectory were believed to be responsible for strange messages scribbled in pencil on the walls. The words in capital letters were written by investigators trying to communicate with the spirit entity. At The Borley Priory, there have been numberless occurrences of "Poltergeist," the violent moving of heavy furniture, the flinging of bottles and stones, the ransacking of locked cupboards, the ringing of bells. Footsteps, at times, are heard in the empty passages. A sad wailing voce rises from the cellar-well.
