The Crown Inn
BILDESTON, SUFFOLK

The Crown Inn was originally built as a private house for a local wool merchant in 1495 and has a well-deserved reputation for being haunted. The most famous incident occurred in the 1950’s when the landlord was disturbed by a series of knocking sounds coming from the front door. He looked from an upstairs window, where he had a completely clear view of the front door, to see who the culprits were, but was astonished to find that there was nobody there although the door was still being pounded loudly. The mother-in-law of one of the landlords was sitting at her dressing room table on another occasion when she saw through the mirror the strange shape of a man standing behind her. When she turned round the figure had gone. Loud mysterious footsteps have been heard in the corridor outside the bedrooms and dramatic drops in temperature have been recorded for no accountable reason. Visitors to the pub have reported the icy sensation of being touched on their faces by cold invisible hands. On one occasion, a man wearing an old overcoat and an old-fashioned type of hat, was seen standing at the bar but he disappeared as soon as he was seen. Other spirits said to haunt the Inn are two children who have been seen holding a Music Box and a lady who hanged herself.
