Sawston Hall
SAWSTON, CAMBRIDGESHIRE
This Tudor mansion was occupied by the Huddleston Family from the 16th century through to the 1970's. The family has entertained many important historical
figures there, including Mary Tudor (Bloody Mary). After the death of Edward VI in 1553 John Dudley, the Duke of Northumberland, who wanted Lady Jane Grey
to succeed the throne, invited the rightful heir Mary and her sister Elizabeth to London. Learning of his dishonourable intentions after leaving for London Mary
took refuge in Sawston Hall. The Duke's men eventually made their way to Sawston only for Mary to escape just before the building was burnt to the ground.
Mary was eventually crowned Queen after support for the Duke dwindled, and John Dudley and Lady Jane Grey were executed at the Tower of London. John
Huddleston, knighted for his support for Mary, set about re-building the Hall. In later times the Huddleston’s remained Catholic when much of the country was
Protestant, and a priest hole survives from the time. The ghost of Queen Mary is said to have been seen in the hall, smiling and happy as she was here in life.
Ghostly Spinney music has also been heard, and this has also been attributed to Mary. Other paranormal activity recorded ghostly footsteps and doors which
shake on their own as though somebody was checking if the room was locked. A 'Lady in Gray' is also said to haunt the Tapestry Room, although her identity
is unknown, while strange knocks and eerie children's laughter have also been reported.
