Chale Church
CHALE, ISLE OF WIGHT

Funerals are a common sight in a country churchyard - but a sombre phantom funeral seen here at the Norman church of St Andrew, was a ghostly lesson in living history among the weathered tombstones. Strangely garbed mourners in 18th century clothing, standing with their heads bowed at a freshly dug grave, appeared during a curios time-slip at Chale a few years ago. By tradition, every churchyard is said to be haunted by only one ghost - The Watcher - who appears in a shroud or winding cloth, guarding the dead, and waiting to call the next soul in the parish whose turn it is to die.
