Greengate Brewery
MIDDLETON, MANCHESTER
The Greengate Brewery is thought to date back to the 17th century, known to have originally have been a row of cottages relating to a "Greengate House"
on the site in 1791. Manufacturer John Lee bought the cottages in 1828 to set himself up as a brewer. About 175 years on, JW Lees & Co. is still going
strong. The history of the buildings include a number of workmen who apparently died during the sinking of the brewery well in the 19th Century. In the
1930's the brewery supervisor also went missing, and was eventually found curled up dead at the bottom of the well. Paranormal sightings include a lady
seen sitting at the JW Lees Boardroom table, facing away from the table. A woman in a long, brown dress has also been glimpsed coming through the
staff kitchen door, while a hovering brown cloaked figure, tall and slim, has also been seen along with a figure in a white cloak in the brew house. In the
tank room there have also been several stories of poltergeist activity.
