Tatton Old Hall
TATTON, CHESHIRE

The Stanley family built the original manor in around 1490, though it then passed to the Brereton family who enlarged the hall to its present size in the 1580s.The remains of Tatton Green, a medieval village are buried outside the old hall. Sir Thomas Egerton (who later became Lord Chancellor of England) bought Tatton in 1598 though he never lived there. It was then passed on to sons of the Egerton family who rarely visited and leased the estate to tenants. In the late 17th Century the estate passed to the Lord Chancellor's Great Great Grandson, John Egerton, who then built the new house. The roof in the Great Hall is original and is currently undergoing tree ring dating to pinpoint the exact date but it's thought to have been built between 1480 and 1520. The Great Hall itself was split into three parts at some point to provide cottages for estate workers and so the roof was hidden for many years. Reports of paranormal activity at The Hall are rife. People have suggested there is a friendly but mischievous presence throughout the building. Staff and visitors have claimed to feel something touching or being placed around their necks and hair has been pulled by something unseen. Footsteps and loud bangs have been heard and strange vibrations can be felt through the floor. And feelings of expectancy and unease can often be felt in many rooms in the building.
