Walton Hall
WARRINGTON, CHESHIRE

Walton Hall is remnant of a much larger estate purchased in 1812 by the Greenall Family, famous for their brewing industry. The Hall itself was built in the Elizabethan style during the 1830's designed by Edmund Sharpe of Lancaster. He became famous for the Gothic revival of Victorian architecture. In the 1870's various extensions were built including the clock tower and the large Gothic style wing. The first Greenall to reside at the Hall was Gilbert, the grandson of Thomas who was the founder of the families brewing empire and a renowned Conservative MP for Warrington. The Hall passed through to the next generation of the Greenall family, to Gilberts son, also named Gilbert, and in 1927 he became the first Lord Daresbury. Lord Daresbury died in 1938 and unfortunately left the family owing £500,000 in death duties. This led to the sale of the Walton Hall Estate during 1941 and the Hall was purchased by Warrington Council. Paranormal activity over the years has included a lady walking the main staircase, said to be the first Lady Daresbury, curtains opening by themselves in the Library and electrical problems in the main function room. Guests have spoken of uneasy feelings throughout the building, as if being watched by unseen eyes.
