Buckland Abbey
YELVERTON, DEVON

Buckland Abbey on Dartmoor was a medieval monastery before becoming the home of Sir Francis Drake, who was reputed to have supernatural powers. Legend has it that Drake made a pact with the Devil to ensure success as the Armada approached the English coast. His ghost is now reputed to drive across Dartmoor in a black coach drawn by headless horses, preceded by twelve goblins and pursued by a pack of baying hounds - any dog which hears their unearthly baying dies instantly. Folklorists have speculated that this legend was the origin of the Hound of the Baskervilles story. After dark, local people also avoid the walk between the South and North lodges of Buckland Abbey as they believe it is haunted by the spirit of a monk who committed suicide when his illicit love affair was brought to the attention of the Abbott.
