Charleville Forest Castle
NEAR TULLAMORE, COUNTY OFFALLY

The castle was built in 1779 and features prominent turrets and spires, clinging ivy and a medieval grotto. It is regarded to be the finest Gothic Revival building in Ireland. There are fifty-five rooms in all, as well as a magnificent gallery running the whole width of the building. The Charleville Castle has been searched over for years by parapsychologists and forensic investigators with equipment in search for poltergeists. The story goes, the castle was built over the top of an ancient druid burial ground where people were once buried alive in an attempt to stop the spread of the black plague centuries before. There have also been suggestions that the man who built it practised devil worship. Spooky happenings have been taking place as recently as at the turn of the century, when a young girl fell to her death from a staircase banister who's spirit still roams around the castle. The Hutton-Burys are the present owners and intend to restore the property and turn it into a classy hotel.
