Tutbury Castle
TUTBURY, STAFFORDSHIRE Series 2 Episode 2 First Aired: April 15th 2003 |
|
| Location Background | |
Tutbury, celebrated for its ruined castle, was once a market town seated on the south bank of the River Dove. The tower on top of the motte dates from the mid 18th century. The original Norman castle is said to date back to 1071 belonging first to Hugh de Avranches and then to Henry, Lord of Ferriers and Chambrais in Normandy. In 1174, following a disagreement with William Ferriers, King Henry II lay siege to the castle and ordered it to be demolished. In 1263 it came under further attack from Prince Edward (the future King Edward I). Two years later, Henry III gave Tutbury Castle to his younger son Edmund. It has remained in the hands of the Earls and Dukes of Lancaster ever since. In 1362, new walls, towers and buildings were added on by John of Gaunt, second Duke of Lancaster. And in the late 16th Century the castle was used to keep Mary Queen of Scots imprisoned. The final straw came in 1646, during the Civil War when Parliamentary forces inflicted even more damage leaving the ruins you can see today. |

| Brief Episode Synopsis | |
The investigation began outside, with Derek picking up on the residual energy of mass carnage where he suggested hundreds of bodies were buried underneath a large stone monument on a hill. He proceeded to connect with a number of energies, one of which informed him that the structure was not real. Richard Felix confirmed that there would have indeed been great loss of life on the site, while the structure was indeed false, known as a ‘Folly’. Inside the castle Derek senses a portal within the King’s Bedroom, one of the most potent paranormal locations in the castle, while negative energy appears to reside in the room. He suggests that two spirits enter at this point, witnessed by the energies of a young boy. By the fireplace of the Great Hall Derek reveals a connection with King Henry and his nephew Rupert, both of which are verified. An experiment then takes place with the curator of the castle, Lesley Smith, re-enacting Mary Queen of Scots. A single orb is visible on camera during her monologue. Yvette and Phil then undertake a vigil in the Great Hall and adjoining King’s Bedroom. While Yvette is in the bedroom, the door appears to close of its own volition. She then hears a blowing in her ear. This is followed by some significant activity in the hall, where both Yvette and Phil witness tapping on a window supposedly haunted by an old lady, and one single loud crash on the window sends them running. Upon returning another orb is captured, while the lights begin to flicker and dim. |
