RAF East Kirkby
EAST KIRKBY, LINCOLNSHIRE Series 3 Episode 1 First Aired: October 7th 2003 |
|
| Location Background | |
Work started on the construction of the airfield in 1942 and by the middle of 1943 East Kirkby's runways were operational and 57 Squadron, equipped with Lancasters, arrived. During November 1943, 630 Squadron was formed and also remained at East Kirkby for the duration of the war. The number of servicemen and women stationed at East Kirkby soon exceeded the 2,000 level. East Kirkby's aircraft suffered losses in the Berlin and Nuremberg raids, but its worst night was 21 June 1944 when 11 aircraft were lost in an attack. Towards the end of the war, in April 1945, a Lancaster caught fire while being bombed up, resulting in a huge explosion which set off further bombs. Four people were killed, six Lancasters totally destroyed, and a further fourteen damaged. In the post-war period, the airfield was used for trials and for a short time during the mid-1950s it was occupied by United States Air Force. Eventually closing in 1958, the RAF finally disposed of the site in 1970. In recent years due to the work of Fred and Harold Panton, East Kirkby is now home to the Lincolnshire Aviation Heritage Centre. |

| Brief Episode Synopsis | |
During the initial walk-around in the Aircraft Hangar Derek connects with a number of residual energies, one specifically in relation to the Lancaster Bomber where he picked up on 2 sergeants (Rob Bank and Arthur Henderson) who had died in mid-air collisions. Derek then proceeded to reveal information about a tormented Canadian pilot who apparently had been told he had to wait before landing, however his plane was low on fuel and he tragically crashed and died. Derek revealed that he still apparently makes his way to the control tower in anger searching for an explanation from the controller who wouldn’t let him land. He also amazingly connects with some information about a document in his wallet recovered from the wreckage that related to a motor car he should have collected that very same day. Whilst visiting the tower Derek connected with the name Norman Watt in relation to this pilot. Returning to the hangar Karl and Jonathon (who works at the Airfield) both believe they see a manifestation of a man in uniform pointing towards the Lancaster. Jonathon is then overcome with a feverish temperature and has to be removed from the hangar. By this time the team had split into groups, and further activity included an orb and what sounded like a stone landing on one of the glass cabinets. At this point Karl begins to feel that his arm is burning, and the team verify that it smells like burnt skin. Derek suggests this is a form of transference of the conditions one of the fateful pilots would have endured. On returning to the tower a large flash of light is observed, and a door is heard closing. |
