Owlpen Manor
DURSLEY, GLOUCESTERSHIRE Series 4 Episode 1 First Aired: March 23rd 2004 |
|
| Location Background | |
Owlpen Manor is a stone manor house, church and mill based in Gloucestershire. It was built in the 16th century as a private residence but the Deeds go back to 1210 suggesting there was some sort of house on this land prior to the 1500s. The Manor was the home to refugee children who had been removed from major UK cities during WWII, while Queen Margaret of Anjou, wife of Henry VI, stayed at Owlpen in 1471 and spent her last happy night before her defeat, exile and eventual widowhood. There are some reports of a ‘hooded figure' or ‘Black Monk' who is said to haunt Owlpen. Some say he is Bartholomew de Olpenne whose family owned the manor in the 1100s, and who was walled up and starved to death in the manor. His bones were found but apparently crumbled to dust when the space came to light. Paranormal activity includes a grey lady, a mischievous child who is said to run up and down the back stairs disturbing the sleep of the guests and moving objects in the house, and the ghost of an Alchemist who was lord of the manor in Georgian times and who apparently stalks the attic floor of the 1616 wing. |

| Brief Episode Synopsis | |
The investigation begins in the parlour with Derek refers to a lady who he believes had lost her son as well as a dark male presence. Moving upstairs to the Queen’s bedroom he associates the name ‘Margaret of Anjou’ to the lady. Derek then picks up on the name of the dark spirit referring to him as ‘Daniel’. As the walk-around progresses Yvette appears to be feeling uncomfortable and unwell as Derek reveals the negative energies are building. As the night-time vigils begin the crew, joined by psychic Ian Lawman, split into small teams. In the attic a number of strange sounds are heard while Karl feels a slight blow to his head. As the energy continues to build even the owner’s dog begins to show signs of discomfort. A large orb is caught on camera and there appears to be a knock on the door, after which Derek joins the team in the Attic. At this point a book apparently falls from one of the shelves, while two disturbing-looking drawings fall from the book onto the bed. Further books are then captured falling from the bookcases. In another part if the Manor the camera catches what appears to be a large wooden dresser rocking of its own accord as Derek describes a spirit presence rushing past him. The investigation concluded with a dramatic séance where a malevolent spirit appears to take control of Derek who aggressively and verbally confronts Yvette, to which she commendably held her own, after which he took Phil by the throat. The crew pounced on Derek and wrestled him away, which signalled the end to the night’s work. Most Haunted Extra footage also showed further anomalous lights captured in one of the corridors. |
