Annesley Hall  ANNESLEY, NOTTINGHAMSHIRE
Series 5 Episode 13
First Aired: December 7th 2004
Location Background

Originally a hunting lodge, Annelsey Hall was built in 1156, and William the conqueror granted the Manor of Annesley to a Norman lord named Ralph Fitz-Hubert. The Annesley's of Annesley were lords of the manor until the 15th Century after which the Chaworth family owned the estate. The hall has associations with the poet Lord Byron as it was the home of his childhood sweet-heart, Mary Ann Chaworth, while Lord Byron also had a bedroom at the hall. Mary Chaworth she married John Musters in 1805, and the Chaworth-Musters owned the property until 1973 when it was sold. The Hall was devastated by fire in 1997 and has been owned by a local builder since the 1980s. Paranormal sightings include a black figure of an old man, the ghostly figure of a monk in the graveyard, and a man with a tri-corn hat has been spotted in the Breakfast Room. The apparition of a young girl has also been seen in the old laundry room, possibly related to the story of a young girl who fell pregnant to one of the landed gentry and hung herself. The bones of a pregnant woman have also been found underneath the staircase.

Brief Episode Synopsis

Derek's walk around began on the ground floor where he connected with William, a malevolent spirit, as well as a tormented lady called Elizabeth, a boy who had been tortured and blinded, and a girl called Isabel. David Wells has also earlier connected with the spirit of Elizabeth who he visualised covered in blood after being violently murdered by her husband. The group then attempted a séance upstairs, where a few knocks occurred under the table, while Derek appeared to be possessed initially by Elizabeth, and then by the aggressive spirit of William in response to Yvette calling him a coward. The vigils then began with Karl undertaking a solo investigation of the cellar, where he experienced a number of strange noises and shuffling, almost reminiscent of a footstep. Karl then joined Stuart for a vigil on the ground floor where a single loud noise was captured but nothing of greater significance. The final and most impressive vigil occurred when Karl joined Richard and Alex to investigate the Cottages and the Belfry. Initially they captured a bright rising light anomaly while all felt a sense of icy coldness. Then Karl chose to climb up and position himself at the back of the clock, where he asked if Elizabeth was in the room whether she was able to show them a sign by stopping the clock. The camera then picks up the pendulum clearly slowing to a halt, and after a few seconds the pendulum begins to swing again and the clock amazingly re-starts. After this success Richard decides to ask Elizabeth to repeat the feat, and almost immediately the pendulum again slows to a complete stop and shortly after begins to swing again as the clock re-started for a second time. Bemused and excited by this the team ask for further confirmation of her presence, at which point a loud knock is heard followed by 3 loud chimes. Karl is startled, however after settling they realise that coincidentally it had actually reached 3 o'clock.
