Black Swan Hotel
DEVIZES, WILTSHIRE Series 5 Episode 5 First Aired: October 12th 2004 |
|
| Location Background | |
A former pub but now a hotel, the current building was built in 1732. According to local historians the cellars date back to the 1600's when a previous pub known as the Nags Head stood on this site. It was owned by a notorious horse dealer and suspected highwayman, Ambrose Saintsbury. In 1732, the building was re-built and renamed the Sergeant's Head. The proprieter at that time was Francis Paradise, however the building was leased to Walter Flay, and in the same year, was struck by lightening, causing severe damage to the stables. The cellars have five chambers which lead off from a central passage; however the rear of the cellar has been bricked up, blocking access to what is believed some extra 100 feet or so of underground tunnel, which runs under the establishment's yard. In 1999, John Girven removed a brick from this area while investigating the suspected tunnel. This act allegedly marked the start of the severe haunting of the cellar area. During a recent investigation, a man in a three cornered hat was seen in the basement. Many guests who have stayed in Room 4 have reported the apparition of a young woman who sits in a chair and looks out of the window towards the Market Place. She is believed to have died during childbirth in this room. |

| Brief Episode Synopsis | |
The investigation began in Room 4 where both Derek and guest psychic Uri Gellar connected with the spirit of a woman called Mary who they felt had tragically died in the building. Derek suggested this linked with a sinister man in a dark cloak who he also felt was present. Derek felt drawn to the window with this lady, while psychic artist Brian Sheppard had drawn the image of a pregnant woman sat in a chair at the window believing her name to be Mary, as well as a dishevelled man who lurked in the cellar. Within the restaurant area Derek connected with a mischievous spirit that would be responsible for much poltergeist activity. They both felt drawn to a corner of the room where a negative presence could be sensed, while Uri connected with a shelf which is known by the landlord to have activity associated with it. The team then investigated the cellar which both Derek and Uri felt had a foreboding atmosphere where much slaughter and carnage had taken place. Both were drawn to a bricked-up wall, behind which they felt the remains of many bodies could be found. At this point Derek sensed the energies with a young girl who he felt had her throat slit, and a noise was heard as Ciarán picked up a sudden high EMF reading. During the vigils little of any significance occurred apart from a couple of light anomalies, although in the restaurant a loud tap was heard coming from the back of the room at which point Derek saw the image of a lady. The cellar became the hub of activity as Karl was given permission to break through the bricked-up wall, however besides a few small bones (apparently human) little else could be uncovered as behind the wall was another wall, seemingly erected to keep people out. |
