The Chough Hotel
CHARD, SOMERSET Series 5 Episode 7 First Aired: October 26th 2004 |
|
| Location Background | |
The Chough Hotel is believed to date back to the mid-1600s, as there is a fireplace which bears the date of 1644. The building survived a disastrous fire which swept through the area in 1578, while in 1685 King James II waged war against the Rebellion of the Duke of Monmouth and a battle was fought nearby. The rebels were defeated and slaughtered, Monmouth was captured, tried and beheaded despite his pleas for mercy. Monmouth supporters were then hunted through the West Country by Judge Jeffreys and Colonel Percy Kirke who carried out executions of anyone suspected of complicity. Jeffreys once stayed at the hotel, and was responsible for the deaths of more than 300 people. Paranormal activity includes the ghost of nasty old man crouched by the fireplace widely believed to be Jeffreys, and a shadowy figure has been spotted in the corridor. Built into the wall by the fireplace is a gravestone, however no one ever manages to take a 35mm flash photograph of it. In the 1890s a sealed room was discovered and opened up, and today it forms part of the bar but the area is considered very haunted. |

| Brief Episode Synopsis | |
The investigation began in the Bar Area where Derek picked up on a Judge George Jefferies (verified) as well as a witch he named 'Winifred'. At this point he made reference to a coffin, and unknown to the Most Haunted Team the owner revealed a small coffin housing the skeleton of a bird, possibly belonging to winifred which had been unearthed on site. Derek then felt a link to a Headstone, which was then verified as one can be found within the stonework of the fireplace, appearing to have the name 'Winifred' carved upside down. Some activity was recorded as guest David Bull felt a cold spot, while the team clearly heard footsteps sounds from above. Moving to the Attic Derek sensed the presence of a number of dark souls observing them while David Bull felt convinced he saw a shape behind Derek. At this point a sudden lound rumbling sound appears to come from the Fridge-Freezer, however this had been turned off by the owner. The team then made their way to The Children's Room where Derek connected with a small boy who he felt had an impediment. Coincidentally Guest Medium Ian Lawman had earlier picked up on the same presence, suggesting a young boy with a disability in that room. Both mediums also agreed that the child died from some kind of breathing difficulty. As the vigils began the teams split into smaller groups, and one consistent occurence appeared to be the phenomenon of loud, clear footsteps being heard by virtually all teams involved, specifically coming coming at times and from areas where no other team members were active. While in the Train Room Derek almost became possessed, while in the Long Room the team caught a brief light anomoly, experienced some strange scratching sounds and again heard heavy footsteps. Finally David Bull undertook a solo vigil in the Attic. After 20 minutes he felt presences observing him and he felt a rush of cold air with a trail of smoke passed in front of him. |
