Bodmin Moor Jail
BODMIN, CORNWALL Series 6 Episode 1 First Aired: March 22nd 2005 |
|
| Location Background | |
An ominous and foreboding stone prison, Bodmin Jail was the first to hold prisoners in individual cells. The first jail was built in 1779 but the present buidling was completed in 1860. During its 150 year period as a grim and dark place of punishment, a total of 55 prisoners were executed, all by hanging. In 1844 a crowd of 20,000 gathered to witness the hanging of Matthew Weeks, executed for supposedly murdering his girlfriend Charlotte Dymond. The last public hanging in Britain was here in 1909 and seven years later the civil prison was eventually closed. During the First World War the empty jail was entrusted with keeping some of the nation's treasures including the Domesday Book, State Papers, and some say the Crown Jewels. As the building was a site of much premature death and intense suffering, there have been many supernatural incidences throughout the jail. In particular, the ghost of Matthew Weekes apparently haunts the prison because he was innocent. Other notible occupants said to roam its deserted corridors and cells today include Selina Wadge who was hanged the murder of her illegitimate son and Anne Jefferies who was starved until she admitted to being a witch. |

| Brief Episode Synopsis | |
The investigation begins with Derek's walk-around where he connects with the Lightfoot brothers who were imprisoned and hanged for murder in the 1840's. He then makes contact with a dark entity, a South African called Creed, who appears to send Derek into a aggressive possession-state, stalking the cells and knocking over furniture. While Derek recovers from this encounter David Wells joins the team, and immediately connects with an Irish women, Mary Monroe, who he felt was incarcerated with her child and tortured in the jail. The image he is shown is that of a pretty young woman dragging her dead child behind her. The vigils begin with the crew splitting into two groups investigating both the main jail and the adjoining naval prison. While in the exposed Naval Prison the crew suggest that they hear what sounds like jangling keys on at least two separate occasions. They then proceed with a Glass Divination experiment where they appear to contact a prisoner called George, as the Glass moves and at one point tips over. The faint sound of what sounds like a ship's horn is even picked up on camera. As the divination continues the table also appears to jolt twice with no obvious explanation. The crew then decide to join together in the Naval Prison, where initially Karl believes he has sees a shadow, while shortly after Yvette says she sees something moving against the wall. Then it sounds as if something drops from the wall to the floor, startling the team. Here the crew experience a number of strange noises and breathing while Stuart appears to capture a white flash on camera, although it was raining at the time. A number of loud knocks are then heard while David senses that both a Jailor and a young Prisoner are present. After concluding the vigils it appears that a trigger object experiment in the main cellblock reveals the paper appearing to flatten itself out, although this could be attributed to moisture. |
