Appuldurcombe House  WROXALL, ISLE OF WIGHT
Series 6 Episode 12
First Aired: June 7th 2005
Location Background

Appuldurcombe House is a 300-year-old manor house which dates back to the early 18th century, but there has been a building on the site since 1200. The original building was a religious house, but for 300 years from the early 16th century Appuldurcombe was the home of the Worsley family and was once the most important estate on the island. In the 16th century Henry VIII was entertained here, while in 1587 the young sons of Richard Worsley were killed in an explosion at the Gatehouse. In 1781 Seymour Dorothy Fleming, the wife of Sir Richard Worsley, caused a great scandal by having a high-profile affair. She later admitted to having had 27 lovers. In 1867 it became a school called Dr Pound's Academy for Young Gentlemen, and from 1909 the house was unoccupied except by troops during both world wars, and in 1943 it was partly destroyed by German bombs. Paranormal activity recorded at the house include sightings of a beautiful woman in the Stable Cottage, a ghostly carriage near the entrance to the grounds and near the Freemantle Gate a boy's laughter has been heard. From the window of the Gatehouse figures have been seen moving from the gate down along the drive, while a flickering candle is repeatedly spotted floating around the main staircase.

Brief Episode Synopsis

Derek's walk around began in the ground floor suggesting that the room had been used as a kitchen as far back as 1630, however the present house has only stood since 1702. Approaching the Great Hall Derek was aroused by what he felt were sounds of chanting, however Yvette brought his attention to a creaking drain pipe nearby which was responsible for the noise. Within the Great Hall Derek suggested a past of dark, satanic rituals, with a pentangle laid beneath the floor. Moving down to the cellars he continues the theme of the dark arts suggesting a powerful vortex and a history of human sacrifice. Although during David Wells' walk around he did suggest a history of animal blood letting linked to Pagan rituals in the cellar, his overall impression was of a flat and quite atmosphere. The vigils began with a séance in the Great Hall, while Karl and Stuart investigated a drainage tunnel near the cellars. The séance brought about much suggestion of activity without little actual evidence, although at one point Yvette's chair did appear to jolt as if being pulled from underneath her. The vigil in the tunnel proved far more active, if partly as a result of imaginative fear fuelled by claustrophobia. Of greatest significance was a moment when during Stuart's lone vigil he clearly heard a groaning sound coming from the end of the tunnel. Karl's foray also produced some drama as he suggested being pushed down from behind, sensing a presence with him in the tunnel. The vigils culminated with Derek sensing the presence of a negative spirit circling him in the Great Hall, eventually resulting in him undergoing a possession state and lurching towards Cath. After being dragged away by the rest of the crew Derek was quickly brought around. Other activity included Stuart picking up a faint light anomaly in the tunnel, while he was also unable to hear the responses of the team via his walkie talkie, while his initial call for help initially startled Yvette into a brief panic attack during a quiet moment of the séance.
