Fyvie Castle
TURRIFF, ABERDEENSHIRE Series 6 Episode 13 First Aired: June 14th 2005 |

| Location Background | |
An impressive building that was formerly a royal stronghold, Fyvie is possibly one of the finest examples of Scottish Baronial architecture. A castle has existed on this site since 1211 but most of the current building was built in the 14th/15th century. William the Lion was at Fyvie around 1213 and Alexander II granted a charter there in 1222. King Edward I stayed at "Fyvin Chastel" in July 1296 while later Robert the Bruce dispensed justice in an open-air court there. From 1390, following the Battle of Otterburn, five successive families (Preston, Meldrum, Seton, Gordon and Leith) each built one of Fyvie Castle's five towers. In 1596 it was sold to Alexander Seton, who enlarged the castle and added the upper works. In 1601 Dame Lilias Drummond, Seton's first wife, died. Some believe she was starved to death by her husband because she failed to give him a male heir. Tradition says she was imprisoned in the Douglas Room. Her family tried to rescue her but were caught, slaughtered in her presence and their mutilated bodies thrown from the window. In 1982 Sir Andrew Forbes-Leith sold Fyvie and its contents to The National Trust for Scotland. The most famous Paranormal encounter is that of Lilias, otherwise known as The Green Lady. Legend has it that on the wedding night of Alexander and his second wife, heavy sighs and scratching noises were heard from outside their chamber window. In the morning they found the words D Lilias Drummond carved upside down on the sill, from the outside. |

| Brief Episode Synopsis | |
The investigation commenced with Derek's walk around in The Morning Room. Here he suggested a connection with Satanism and witchcraft and he referred to the name Alexander Seaton who was indeed a former Laird of the castle. However Derek gave the date of 1485 which significantly pre-dates his life, while he also suggested a connection with the rape and murder of his daughter as well as burying his wife behind the fireplace. These horrific event unfortunately could not be verified. During David's walk around in the Gordon Bedroom suggestions were made that the 4-poster bed had moved on a number of occasions, although Stuart only captured the canopy above the bed flowing very slightly. David also made a significant connection with Dame Lilias Drummond here, a spirit whose notoriety and legend is well known. This incident was the beginning of a drawn out communication which lasted the remainder of the investigation, where contact appeared to be made with Dame Lilias through a series of knocks and taps in response to the teams questioning. This communication appeared to reveal a connection between Dame Lilias and Karl, who had known her in a past life and had been a confident during his time at the castle as a stable boy named Dougal. During this episode a number of clear knocks could be heard in response to questions, while even at one point when the team requested 4 knocks to be made, 4 knocks could then be heard. The investigation concluded with a séance in an attempt to draw out further information regarding this supposed past-life liaison between Karl and Dame Lilias. Again knocks could be heard in response to questions, this time appearing to come from the centre of the table. Unfortunately the source of these sounds was unclear, and Ciaran suggested that without the correct controlled conditions this 'phenomena' could not be regarded as paranormal in origin. The episode concluded with footage during the séance of what appeared to be a strange light anomaly passing in front of Karl, with Yvette suggesting that this may have been the spirit of Dame Lilias. |
