Craigeivar Castle  ALFORD, ABERDEENSHIRE
Series 6 Episode 14
First Aired: June 28th 2005
Location Background

This seven-storey castle was built in the early 17th Century and has been called the "epitome of the Jacobean Renaissance in Scotland". Craigievar was completed by William Forbes, otherwise known as Danzig Willie, in 1626. It was built next to his family's estate, Fintray, to show off his wealth and status and he created the new castle from an already-existing castle half built on the site, sold to him by the Mortimer family. The first William Forbes died in 1627 while his son, also called William, was made a Baronet of Nova Scotia by Charles 1st in 1630. In turn his son, Red Sir John, nicknamed because of his complexion and fiery hair colour, succeeded him in 1648. During his residency Red apparently forced a member of the rival Gordon clan out of the window in The Blue Room, where he fell to his doom. In 1963 the castle was bought from the Forbes-Sempill family by a consortium of benefactors and presented to the National Trust for Scotland. The most frequently sighted spirit is the ghost of a musician, a fiddler who fell into the well at the castle and drowned. He is said to appear only to those who bear the name Forbes. The Blue Room is known as 'the ghost room' on account of the frequent disturbances, as dark figures have been seen here, particularly by the window where one of the Gordon clan fell to his death. A mysterious apparition has been seen on the stairs, while a man has been spotted in the Great Hall, wandering aimlessly.

Brief Episode Synopsis

Derek's walk around initially suggested a connection with Richard the Lionheart, however this was extremely unlikely as there are no records of him ever being in this location, while his existence significantly pre-dates any records of a building being in the location. David Wells on the other hand did correctly identify the tale of a man being thrown out of a window as a result of a clan dispute, while he also identified that a window would have existed behind the bed within the Blue Room, which was verified by Richard. It was Richard who undertook the first vigil, descending alone to the dungeons, however nothing of any significance occurred. Much of the night was spent investigating the Great Hall, where both Ian and Stuart believed they had felt either a prodding or pinching sensation, while a number of knocks and bangs where apparently heard in response to some of the team's questions. The investigation concluded with a 'white noise' EVP experiment involving a de-tuned radio. While Karl observed the static from the radio the team conducted a séance in an adjoining room, requesting that any spirit presence make themselves known through the white noise being emitted. Although the radio did appear to change pitch on a few occasions, Ciaran concluded that this did not provide any conclusive evidence of the paranormal. A number of light anomalies were picked up on camera during the vigils, many of which appeared to be dust or insects, however one brief flashing light in front of a sofa was not so easily explained.
