The Black Bull  HAWORTH, WEST YORKSHIRE
Series 6 Episode 15
First Aired: July 5th 2005
Location Background

Little is known about the history of the building although it has always been used as a pub and a hotel. This was also the pub in which Branwell Bronte drank his health away (he bought his Opium in the Apothecary across the cobbled street) whilst his sisters were writing their novels in the Parsonage behind the pub (Both Charlotte and Emily also died in the parsonage). Branwell Bronte was born on June 26th 1817 and died of chronic bronchitis and consumption in 1848. At the age of 19 he was proposed a freemason and later became secretary of the lodge, while meetings were originally held at the Black Bull before moving to Lodge Street. A chair on the stairway at the pub is a Mason's Chair and is thought to be that of Branwell Bronte. The pub also boasts a print of a picture of Branwell and his famous sisters which he later painted himself out of after a family falling out. The story is that he was the actual author of Wuthering Heights and Emily took the manuscript and made slight changes and sold it as her own work. Paranormal activity has included sightings of a man dressed in beige sitting at one of the tables in the main bar, while outside a girl is heard crying in the car park and allotments. A man in a top hat is also often seen sitting at one of the tables, believed to be Dan Sugden, the landlord at the time the Bronte's lived in Haworth. In Room 2 people have woken up to see the dark figure of a man watching them while Room 3 is thought to be haunted by a maid.

Brief Episode Synopsis

Derek began his walkaround in the bar area where he sensed a number of people suffering from chest conditions within the residual energy. He then linked in with an active spirit who he felt was an angry man with distinctive red hair. He then revealed the name of Branwell in connection with this man. David Wells initially connected with the Mason's chair on the stairway, and knowing the history of the area was reluctant to link it to the Bronte's. He did however link in with a man, possibly a brother of the Bronte Sisters, who would have drunk and taken narcotics and would also have sat in the chair in the bar area. Moving to the bar David picked up on the photograph, suggesting Branwell had painted himself out, while he also linked in with the bell above the fireplace, correctly suggesting this would ring on occasions. The first vigil involved Karl, Stuart and Richard attempting a table tipping experiment in the bar area, and although the table did move significant amounts there was not enough evidence to confirm that this was paranormal activity. Richard Felix suggested that the cause was the Branwell's father, Rev. Patrick Bronte. The next vigil took the team into the graveyard belonging to the church behind the pub, where some of the team suggested hearing groaning noises like a monk and shuffling sounds. No conclusive evidence was forthcoming as much of the phenomena experienced outside could easily have been naturally occurring. Stuart and Karl then decide to tackle the graveyard alone, and again there are many subjective experiences which are not easily verified as paranormal. Finally Cath and Rachel investigate the cellars, where on one occasion they did pick up what sounded like a distinct coughing noise, while a few other anomalous sounds were also experienced.
