Whaley House  SAN DIEGO, CALIFORNIA
Series 6 Episode 16
First Aired: July 12th 2005
Location Background

Whaley House was built by Thomas Whaley in 1856-1857 and is the oldest brick structure in Southern California. At the time it was built the Greek-Revival-style house was the most magnificent example of architecture in the area. American parapsychologist Hans Holzer and others have said that the Whaley House is possibly the most haunted house in America. As well as a family home the house has served as a Protestant Church, City Hall, Theatre, Public school and Courtroom. It has been a museum since 1960. It is thought that the ghosts in the house include: an executed man, 'Yankee Jim', Mr. Whaley, Mrs Whaley, several unknown apparitions, a little girl and one of the Whaley children who died from Scarlet Fever. A lady in gingham has been seen, as has a little girl and a man in frock coat. In the Kitchen, children's cries have been heard and a meat cleaver hanging on display often swings ominously. In the bedroom, a young boy is sometimes seen playing while in the Garden a ghostly cat and dog are chased through the walls from the garden.

Brief Episode Synopsis

Derek began his walk around downstairs, connecting with the name Thomas in relation to a photograph hanging on the wall, and felt he had a strong relationship to the house. He also felt that the photograph of a woman on the other side of the room was also linked, both to the house and to Thomas. He also connected the selling of goods with Thomas, which relates to the fact that he used to run a store from the house. David Wells made a strong connection downstairs with a dark column of light, suggesting that he felt sick when he walked through this area. Later during a glass divination experiment he related this to the supposed spirit of 'Yankee Jim'. The vigils began with an attempt at divination downstairs in an attempt to contact Jim. The glass moved on regular intervals in response questions, appearing to verify the legend of who he was and how he had passed over. David attempted to encourage Jim to accept their offer of help in moving on to the light, and it appeared that he withdrew to consider the proposition. During the séance the team suggested that the glass was actually vibrating at on point, although this was not clearly picked up on camera. During a vigil in the upstairs theatre it appears that the team received a number of strange knocks in response to attempts to communicate, and at one point when requesting a more definite sign the knock became loud and clear, as if someone has stamped on the wooden floor. The suggestion here was that they were connecting with the spirit of Anna Whaley, and it appeared according to David that she was not comfortable with their presence, nor did she appreciate David's suggestion that she remained there purely because Thomas refused to leave. The night concluded with a séance downstairs in a further attempt to contact 'Yankee Jim', with David suggesting he had appeared to him sitting back in the judges chair wearing cowboy boots and portraying himself in skeletal form. It appeared that he did not require the services of the team, and the remainder of the investigation remained for the most part uneventful.
