The Queen Mary (Part 2)  LONG BEACH, CALIFORNIA
Series 6 Episode 18
First Aired: July 26th 2005
Location Background

The ship was commissioned by Cunard Steamship Company Ltd and was launched on September 26 1934 by Queen Mary, making its maiden voyage on May 27 1936. Originally a luxury transatlantic ocean liner it made its final peacetime voyage carrying her largest number of passengers to date: 2,552, including Bob Hope and $44 million in gold bullion. It also served as a troop ship in World War 2 carrying a total of 765,429 military personnel with up to 15,000 troops at a time. The ship also carried the wounded returning to the US and transported Winston Churchill 3 times. She retired from regular passenger service on 19th September 1967 after completing 1,001 crossings of the Atlantic and arrived in Long Beach December 9th 1967, where it is now permanently dry docked at Pier J as a hotel, museum, restaurant and rental place for special events. Paranormal activity on the ship has been well documented, with many sightings of apparitions including Senior 2nd Officer William Stark and 2 women who are said to have been drowned in the pool. In the Queen's Salon, a beautiful woman in a flowing white dress is often seen dancing alone, while most areas of the ship appear to have at one time experienced poltergeist activity, disembodied voices and strange rapping sounds.

Brief Episode Synopsis

Part 2 of the investigation this time saw the team venture into the depths of the Queen Mary. The initial walk around centred on the Pool and Changing Rooms, where Derek sensed the tragic drowning of 2 separate women, one in the 1930's and the other in 1960. The suggestion is also made that although these women both walk the same area of the ship, it is not likely that they would notice each other as they had originated from different time periods. Moving on to the Engine Room, Karl suddenly appeared to become light headed and dizzy, eventually having to be taken out of that section of the ship to recover. The vigils saw the team initially split into pairs, with Ciaran and Yvette investigating the Crew's offices. The most significant activity occurred when the pair clearly heard strange knocks and bangs coming from the floors beneath them. Meanwhile Karl and Stuart investigated a section of the ship where it is rumoured that a crew member had lost his life after being crushed in an automatic doorway. At one point when Karl knocked loudly 3 times it appeared that an identical number of knocks were returned. It cannot be discounted however that another member of the team had been performing a similar experiment elsewhere, simply returning Karl's knocks believing they too had experienced something paranormal. Karl also suggested that he had witnessed a white shadow pass along the end of one of the corridors, believing this to be Ciaran initially, only to find that there was nobody there. The investigation culminated in the Pool area where 2 apparently significant events took place. Initially John Gilbert suggested that he had briefly seen a woman's form sitting along the edge of the pool, although this was a purely subjective experience and the team did not manage to capture any corroborating phenomena. The final event was initially identified off camera, as some of the team members noticed what appeared to be fresh wet footprints coming out of the pool. When investigating further it appeared that someone or something had indeed produced the effect of a number of salt water footprints along the floor, as well as a larger pool of water at the exit of the pool. Although nothing was caught on film, this did appear to be a significant discovery, however it is known that similar artificial footprints have also been used in paranormal shows staged in that exact location on the ship.
