Tissington Hall
TISSINGTON, DERBYSHIRE Series 6 Episode 23 First Aired: August 30th 2005 |
|
| Location Background | |
Tissington Hall was built by Francis FitzHerbert in 1609, although the top floor wasn't completed until 1700, while the building underwent significant remodelling in 1780 and 1902. The hall has always been home to the FitzHerbert family and has served as their main home for nearly 400 years, though the family has lived in the village for 500 years. The FitzHerbert family originally came to England with William the Conqueror and settled in Derbyshire when William FitzHerbert was granted the Manor of Norbury in 1125. The estate at Tissington came into the hands of the FitzHerbert family when Nicholas FitzHerbert married the heiress Cicely Francis in the late 15th Century. Sir William FitzHerbert was given a Baronetcy by George 3rd in 1784 and his Brother, Alleyne, later became Lord St Helens. Paranormal occurences at the Hall have included unexplained noises in the library where a lamp has been seen moving, while of greatest significance in the supposed spirit presence of Wilhelmina FitzHerbert who died in a tragic accident. In Room 4 people have felt the bed rock and smelt the scent of lavender. |

| Brief Episode Synopsis | |
Derek and David's walk around revealed some of the history of the Hall, with Derek initially linking with the presence of William and Richard FitzHerbert, as well as the names Margaret and Sarah who were also linked to the building's history. During Derek's time in Room 4 the camera appeared to pick up a faint humming or singing sound, possibly be attributed to a lady or a young girl. David began with his initial feelings that the Dining Room would have once hosted the original kitchen, which was verified by Richard Felix. In Room 4 he also correctly connected with the supposed spirit of Wilhelmina FitzHerbert, together with the details of the tragic circumstances which surrounded her death, suggesting she had been badly burned in an accident and died a little over 3 weeks later. The night vigils mainly concentrated on Room 4, where the various teams consistently experienced strange creaking noises from the corridor outside, suggesting that this may have been Wilhelmina's presence, while a single small bright flash had also been captured in an earlier vigil. Meanwhile after investigating the Library, where Karl had also captured a bright light flashing on camera, both he and Stuart embarked upon an anxious visit to the cellars. Initially they felt an unseen presence, while Karl suggested that he had felt his arm had been tugged. Meanwhile in Room 4 Yvette and David attempted an automatic writing experiment using a planchette in an attempt to make further contact with Wilhelmina. Here they had only a little success, revealing some scribbles which slightly resembled an O and a W. They then decided to use the planchette as a more direct method of communication, asking the spirit presence to move it in one direction for yes, and in another direction for no. Here they appeared to distinguish the reason as to why Wilhelmina chose not to show herself, as she felt that it would startle them and she did not wish them to be scared. Karl and Stuart remained in the cellar, where the activity began to increase, culminating with one of the cell doors appearing to close by itself. Clearly startled by this they initially composed themselves before eventually venturing towards the door to investigate the cause of this phenomena. Moving forward into the room beyond the door Karl suddenly felt apprehensive, followed by a loud scream for Stuart as he suggested that he had been struck violently on the arm. Upon hearing the commotion Yvette and Ciaran joined them in the cellar, and remained in an attempt to capture some further activity, however all remained quiet. |
