Somerleyton Hall
LOWESTOFT, SUFFOLK Series 6 Episode 3 First Aired: April 5th 2005 |
|
| Location Background | |
This enormous red brick stately home, surrounded by acres of landscaped gardens, is an early Victorian mansion built on the site of a Jacobean Manor. It is believed there has been a house on the site since the 13th Century, when Sir Peter Fitzosbert first built a manor house in 1240. Isabella Fitzosbert then married Sir Walter Jernegan, and the estate passed through 13 generations of the Jernegan family. The manor was rebuilt 1604 by the then-owner John Wentworth and it remained unchanged until being bought in 1842 by successful building merchant Sir Morton Peto. During World War 2 the building was used as a hospital and dressing-station for the Army and the Navy, while many evacuees from London also took refuge. The present Lord Somerleyton inherited the title in 1959, in 1978 he was appointed Lord-In-Waiting to the Queen. Paranormal sightings include the ghost of a man called Joseph in the cellar, a young girl in the bathroom of the Old Servant's Quarters and unexplained and sinister shadows along the attic corridors. Room 7 has also been locked for 20 years as staff refuse to go in there and an apparition has been caught on camera from the window outside. |

| Brief Episode Synopsis | |
Derek began the investigation with the usual walk around, picking up on a number of spirit entities, both good and bad, who he felt sill roamed the building. Significantly he sensed the disturbed spirit of a woman together with a child when the crew entered the abandoned Room 7 for the first time. The night vigils began with the team splitting into 2 groups. Derek, Richard and the boys explored the attic, where it appeared contact was made with a woman earlier sensed by Derek called Anna. Each time Jon asked for a sign a clearly audible knock could be heard. When the team then stayed silent for 30 seconds no sounds could be heard. Later the team split again, with Derek and Richard exploring the maze, Yvette and David the lower floors while Karl undertook a brave solo vigil in Room 7. Initially Karl picked up a number of strange noises and was continually drawn towards the doorway asking for any spirit present to move it for him. He didn't have long to wait for a response, as shortly after turning and entering a small entrance to the side of Room 7 the door slammed shut, and while Karl desperately fumbled the handle to free himself it appeared that the door was being held from the other side. Eventually he managed to escape and called for assistance as Yvette and David joined him to investigate. Shortly after they had all entered the room the door appeared to close by itself once more, and investigating this they could find no plausible explanation. They then attempted to make contact and similar to the responses earlier in the Attic the team received clear knocking sounds in response to their questions. Finally when leaving the servants quarters along the corridor a strange metallic bell sound was clearly heard. Upon investigating the source it was apparent that a servant bell above one of the doors was swinging and David was able to exactly replicate the sound by knocking the bell against the door frame. |
