The Ghosthouse  NOTTINGHAM, NOTTINGHAMSHIRE
Series 6 Episode 8
First Aired: May 10th 2005
Location Background

The current hall was built in 1848 by C. Challoner, a wine and timber merchant from Liverpool, while the back portion of the house which is owned by the Riddell family dates back to the 16th Century. According to legend there was a battle near the area that the hall now stands on and the grounds were used as a hospital and a place to keep the dead. A Roman road runs through the property and apparently a Roman villa was situated just metres from the house. There has been a building on the site since as early as 1100 AD when the Cressy family lived there until 1408 who were dais to have strong connections with the Knight's Templar. It is thought that in the early part of the 19th Century Edward Challoner killed someone in an illegal duel here and fled north where he married into the Riddell family. In order to further distance himself from the crime he allegedly had himself canonized as a Catholic Bishop. Paranormal encounters have included Roman soldiers spotted marching along the driveway and in the cellars, a woman with red hair and black Elizabethan clothes, an old housekeeper in the servants' quarters, and the back corridors and stairs are said to play host to phantom children. Other guests have included a little girl dressed in Victorian clothing in the dining room and an officer in uniform in the Boudoir, while the current owners believe The Bishop's Room is haunted by the ghost of a particularly unfriendly Bishop.

Brief Episode Synopsis

The walk-around with Derek and David revealed some interesting corroborating evidence in addition to some significant disparities. Initially downstairs both sense a Nanny figure, however David believed she was a pleasant woman while Derek suggested she was very harsh and authoritative. On the first floor landing Derek sensed a Lady playing a piano, which was also sensed by David however this was in a different room. The upstairs bedrooms also showed some inconsistencies with David experiencing some very heavy negative sensations, while Derek, although referring to one room as 'The Devils Den' he also felt extreme happiness in another room that David was unable to remain in. Both sensed a religious figure connected with murder, with Derek linking with a man who was covered up, possibly disguised as a Monk. Approaching the Attic Derek gave the impression of a negative presence at the top of the stairs gesturing for them to go away. The vigils began with Karl alone in the attic attempting to contact a little boy. He appeared to hear a number of strange knocks and audible phenomena around him, however this could have been the large old water tanks nearby which are known to make noises. David and Yvette investigated the upstairs bedrooms, and while laid on the bed it appeared that Jon Gilbert became unusually emotional. In another room they appeared to sense the smell of children's cooked fish which in turn appeared to make David very emotional. A number of interesting light anomalies were picked up on camera during he vigils, however the night remained predominantly uneventful.
