Chambercombe Manor  ILFRACOMBE, DEVON
Series 8 Episode 14
First Aired: September 26th 2006
Location Background

Set in a secluded valley, the House dates from the 11th Century and is mentioned in the Domesday Book. With much of its original architecture still intact, the house contains eight rooms containing items of historical furniture, ranging from Elizabethan to Victorian times, plus a Priest Hole and a famous Haunted Room. The earliest mention of the manor is in 1162, plus other records dating from the Norman Conquest. The Manor was in the possession of the Champernon family until the 15th century then passed through the families of Polglass, Herles and Bonville to the Duke of Suffolk. Lady Jane Grey, a descendent of the house's original owners, visited the property. It is said that the room next to hers is very paranormally active. A secret room, discovered in the 1860s, contained the skeletal remains of a woman. Her ghost is said to haunt the property, though her identity has never been established. Two ghostly girls have been seen while a lady in white dress has been seen on the grounds.

Brief Episode Synopsis

Gordon Smith joins regular medium David Wells for this episode, and begins with his walk around where he correctly connects with Kate Wallace who he believes was imprisoned and had an irish connection. Gordon mentions that Kate was "battered" and he senses a feeling of "guilt". David Wells then connects with a young girl in the Chippendale Room, while upstairs in the bedroom he too links in with Kate and the story of her imprisonment. The night vigils begin with a seance upstairs in Kate's room where Yvette suggests that her trousers move and that there is movement under her feet. A sound resembling a moan is also picked while the team experience sensations of cold Meanwhile Richard and Jo are conducting a vigil downstairs in the Main Hall, suggesting that they feel something is imminent. The seance continues upstairs as Gordon suggests that David's face is changing as he appears to drift off into a trance. The team downstairs begin to hear bangs and noises as well as the sound of breathing, after which the team upstairs hear something resembling a door banging. After going to investigate Richard and Jo suggest that the door to the Main Hall just slammed shut by itself, although nothing is captured on film. The vigils continue with Richard, Gordon, Karl and Yvette in the area behind the haunted bedroom believed to be where Kate had been bricked up. When asking out for a response a few taps are clearly heard, and they suggest that the floor moves slightly (although it is very uneven). After this a crib which is placed in the bedroom appears to start rocking by itself. Karl then proceeds to stand in the doorway of the bedroom where he again captures the crib rocking. Shortly after Gordon starts to suggest that Karl's features are changing, with Yvette suggesting that he has taken on some kind of evil appearance - this is purely subjective and cannot be verified. The investigation concludes with a table tipping experiment where some movement occurs but nothing which can be truly defined as paranormal.
