Brougham Hall
PENRITH, CUMBRIA Series 9 Episode 4 First Aired: January 23rd 2007 |
|
| Location Background | |
Dubbed the 'Windsor of the North' by the Victorians, the site of Brougham Hall has been home to a fortified dwelling since 1307, although there's evidence of Roman occupation in the area and a nearby stone circle could date back far further. Brougham has been in decline since medieval times when its usefulness as a defensive structure diminished, but it has seen extensive periods of restoration. The hall was restored in the 17th century and a pele ower was added, however the main construction occurred in the 19th Century. Brougham Hall has a long connection with royalty, King George V was a regular guest, as was King Edward VII. The long and varied history of the hall and its surroundings has thrown up a plethora of paranormal phenomena. People have sensed the presence of soldiers, both from the Civil War and Roman eras. Poltergeist activity is rife with reports of glasses flying from shelves and taps turning themselves on. Loud bangs and light flashes have been seen frequently and there are even tales of a cursed skull which would cause havoc to ensue if removed from the property. It was eventually walled up in an unknown part of the building to prevent this. |

| Brief Episode Synopsis | |
The initial walk around with David reveals some information about a female energy that he feels haunts the hall, while occasional knocking sounds are heard apparently only when David is talking. They then move outside and down into an old military bunker, where further knocks appear to be heard coming from the corner of the room near to where Karl is standing. Once they have left the bunker a stone appears to be thrown, and David suggests he has been pushed by unseen hands. Ciaran then attempts an experiment with Cath in the Reki Room by re-enacting the treatments that took place there in an attempt to encourage Cath to link in with activity. Unfortunately nothing of significance occurs. Meanwhile outside Karl and Stuart sense something behind a wall, while back in the vigils inside the Hall further objects appear to be thrown towards Yvette. Back in the bunker Karl and Stuart appear to be experiencing movement and objects being thrown, while Karl suggests being hit in the face with something, although nothing conclusive to corroborate any of this is captured on camera. The crew then reassemble together to attempt a séance and table tipping experiment, where as with many other occasions the table is seen to move but no conclusive footage of the underside of the table and the crew's movements mean that this has to be treated with a degree of scepticism. The night concludes with Yvette apparently making emotional contact with her grandmother who had passed away. |
