Alton Towers
ALTON, STAFFORDSHIRE Series 9 Episode 5 First Aired: January 30th 2007 |
|
| Location Background | |
Built on an area known as Bunbury Hill, Alton Towers started its life as an Iron Age fort until around 700AD when it became a fort for Ceolred, Saxon King of Mercia. The land passed through many hands until around the 12th Century that it was given to a crusader called Bertram de Verdun for his efforts in the Holy Land Wars. Eventually it was passed into the hands of the Talbot family. John Talbot, was the first Earl of Shrewsbury and throughout the decades passed down to subsequent Earls, until Charles, the 15th Earl took a major interest and began to extend it in 1800. In 1811 Charles renamed it to Alton Abbey and had a great vision for his home and building continued until his death in 1827. This vision was carried on by his nephew, John, until 1852. After John's death there was a huge family feud as to who had the right to the house and after an expensive legal case, Henry Chetwynd Talbot won. It was in the early 1890's that the 20th Earl, Charles Henry Talbot, decided to develop the estate as a tourist attraction. The estate was eventually sold off in 1924 to a group of local businessmen. In WW2, the house was requisitioned by the British Army and used as a cadet training centre, however as no building repairs were done it fell into a bad condition. After the war, the house was abandoned until 1980 when John Broome started one of the UK's premier attractions. Over the years paranormal activity has included the apparition of a maid seen walking down stairs, unexplained activity around the restaurant toilets, strange occurrences around the 'HEX' attraction and dragging noises heard coming from office areas. |

| Brief Episode Synopsis | |
David Wells initial walk around reveals information about an authoritative female energy wandering around, as well as children. He then senses a menacing spirit and feels that objects may get thrown at the team as the night progresses. Shortly after a stone appears to be thrown, and David is insulted by being referred to as a Witch and other obscenities. More stones are then apparently thrown by unseen hands at the crew, one of which nearly hits Yvette. The team then begin the vigils with a séance where Cath suggests seeing a white light, while David exclaims that he has been poked in the eye as some sort of trick against witches. Karl and Stuart then undertake separate lone vigils where to begin with Stuart feels he is almost hit by an object, while Karl then appears to take a fall and his camera is left laying on the floor still recording. Stuart makes several attempts to locate Karl without success and returns to the crew room where a search party is then sent out, eventually finding him apparently unconscious but was able to be brought around quickly. Clearly this was either some unseen force interacting with Karl, or what is more likely is that he took an unfortunate fall in the dark. |
