Dartford Library  DARTFORD, KENT
Series 9 Episode 6
First Aired: February 6th 2007
Location Background

Dartford Library and the adjacent museum, was constructed in 1916. Originally this was a Carnegie library, built using money donated by Scottish-American businessman Andrew Carnegie, who was responsible for over 2,500 other libraries globally. It was designed by Thomas E. Tiffin AMICE and built in Bath of Portland and York stone, by Messrs H. Friday and Sons and Ling. It was opened in 1916 by A. W. Smale, the Chairman of the Dartford Urban District Council, and W. A. Ward, Chairman of the Library Committee. After successes of local exhibitions displaying Dartford artefacts gathered by collectors such as Dr John Latham, John Dunkin and E. C. Youens, it was decided to incorporate a museum into the library building. The museum room was officially opened in 1921 and the whole building was extended in 1937, to create the structure we see today.

Brief Episode Synopsis

David Wells begins his walk around linking in with a female energy and a group of soldiers. He also mentions being able to smell burning metal, as well as complaining of a violent headache. The team then begin the vigils with an attempt to request the female spirit believed to knock books off the shelves to oblige for the cameras and pick a book of their choosing and throw it to the floor. Off camera (unfortunately) something falls from the bookshelf and a book entitled "The way of all Flesh" by Samuel Butler is found on the floor. Karl then suggests that he sees something, although nothing conclusive can be made of this claim. David is then given a warning from spirit about a man who they should be aware of during the investigation. The crew then begin a séance and table tipping experiment. On one occasion the table does appear to move of its own accord, but no locked off cameras underneath mean that we cannot discount one of the team being responsible. The team then request further books to be brought forward by the supposed spirit energies in the room by requesting certain styles - this begins with a book on philosophy, and incredibly a book about Socrates is found on the floor. Then they asks for a book on World War II and a novel by Sven Hassel called "Wheels of Terror" appears which coincidentally has a swastika on the back. Karl and Stuart then undertake a solo vigil where a few anomalous faint tapping sounds are picked up, after which another book, this time about Muhammad Ali appears to fall on the floor.
