Stockport Workhouse
STOCKPORT, LANCASHIRE Series 9 Episode 7 First Aired: February 13th 2007 |
|
| Location Background | |
Stockport Workhouse was officially opened on Christmas day 1841, although some inmates were actually admitted a few months bpreviously due to overcrowding at other workhouses. Records also show a parish workhouse somewhere in Stockport as far back as 1731. It was designed by Henry Bowman. The only other workhouse that he designed was in Congleton, Cheshire but that has now been demolished. The workhouse had a capacity of around 650, although this may have been exceeded at times. It’s estimated that between 25,000-30,000 people passed through its doors while it was open. Within a year of it’s opening, there was a riot outside as around 20,000 people protested at the gates. This was a familiar site in many of the Northern industrial towns that were hit by a slump in manufacturing. The workhouse was known locally as ‘The Grubber’. |

| Brief Episode Synopsis | |
The initial walk around with David Wells reveals information about possible mental patients who would have been housed in the workhouse, while the occasional unverified knocking sound is heard by the team. He also connects with a little girl by the name of Annie while there is also a suggestion during the walk around that the floor is vibrating. Moving onto the Women's wing where David connects with a strong female energy who he believed would have been a staunch authoritarian in her time. The team then move downstairs to the mortuary where David suggests a man who might not have actually been dead may have had an autopsy performed upon him. A loud noise is then heard off camera, but the origin of this is uncertain. The vigils commence with a séance where Cath begins to cough uncontrollably, although suggestions that this may be of paranormal significance are unfounded. The crew also suggest hearing a groaning sound. The team then attempt a positive visualization experiment of sorts with Ciaran by asking him to imagine his worst fear to try and channel his energy more positively towards the investigation. Shortly after a glass is seen to smash against the floor, and is believed to be the one used in the séance conducted earlier. Again the object is not captured moving on camera from point of origin so this must be treated with an element of scepticism. Karl then conducts a lone vigil where his fears get the better of him when he believes he can hear footsteps moving towards him. The steps are captured on sound and certainly make intriguing viewing. |
