Tatton Old Hall  TATTON, CHESHIRE
Series 9 Episode 8
First Aired: February 20th 2007
Location Background

The Stanley family built the original manor in around 1490, though it then passed to the Brereton family who enlarged the hall to its present size in the 1580s.The remains of Tatton Green, a medieval village are buried outside the old hall. Sir Thomas Egerton (who later became Lord Chancellor of England) bought Tatton in 1598 though he never lived there. It was then passed on to sons of the Egerton family who rarely visited and leased the estate to tenants. In the late 17th Century the estate passed to the Lord Chancellor's Great Great Grandson, John Egerton, who then built the new house. The roof in the Great Hall is original and is currently undergoing tree ring dating to pinpoint the exact date but it's thought to have been built between 1480 and 1520. The Great Hall itself was split into three parts at some point to provide cottages for estate workers and so the roof was hidden for many years. Reports of paranormal activity at The Hall are rife. People have suggested there is a friendly but mischievous presence throughout the building. Staff and visitors have claimed to feel something touching or being placed around their necks and hair has been pulled by something unseen. Footsteps and loud bangs have been heard and strange vibrations can be felt through the floor. And feelings of expectancy and unease can often be felt in many rooms in the building.

Brief Episode Synopsis

David Wells' initial walk around initially reveals a link with a male energy, who he feels is drunk and can be loud and aggressive. He also connects with the name Tom as well as possible child energies in the building. David then visualizes a man wearing a 'tapestry' as well as a male figure in a cardigan, and feels that animals have been killed. He then suggests that something has stroked his face, while Yvette hears sounds similar to pebbles on the floor. David then reveals that a black mass of some kind moved towards him, which leaves him feeling a little wary. The team then conduct a séance where the table again appears to move, but without cameras under the table it is not feasible to suggest anything paranormal in origin. Cath and Yvette then conduct a vigil together where apart from some self induced hysteria there is little of note to report. A little later Yvette then suggests that she senses this male energy will attempt to do something, after which an object appears to be thrown. The team also suggest hearing a growling noise, while this is followed by a number of other stones being thrown, the origin of which is unclear. They then attempt an experiment by placing one of the stones on a bicycle seat, and after moving away it appears that the stone is moved (again nothing is captured on camera). After an effort to repeat the experiment with a lock-off in place no movement is captured on film. The night concludes with the apparent activity of a bottle being thrown, but without evidence of its origin of footage of the movement itself this is again unworthy of being considered truly paranormal.
