Edinburgh has been home to many reported stories and sightings of ghostly images, such as the Tunnel piper who
reportedly haunts the underground tunnels of the Royal Mile. one of the most famous of Edinburgh's ghosts is the
MacKenzie Poltergeist, an unfriendly spook that haunts the Covenanters Prison in Greyfriars Graveyard and the
white lady of Costorphine Castle. The Blair Street vaults are part of Edinburgh's South Bridge, completed in 1788.
People visiting the vaults have had heard mysterious footsteps, smells of alcohol, being prodded and
pulled, breathing sounds and a fearful apprehension. Mary Kings Close comprises a number of underground closes,
with houses that stretch up to seven stories high, on either side of the narrow walkways. The ghost of Mary King
reportedly haunts the area, while the apparition of little girl whose face is covered in pustules from the plague,
has been seen.
